What is the process for obtaining an airworthiness certificate?

In California, obtaining an airworthiness certificate, generally referred to as a C of A, involves following a few steps. First, an aircraft must be registered with the FAA and allocated a unique N-number. Next, an inspection of the aircraft must be conducted to make sure it meets the requisite safety requirements. This inspection can be done at a nearby FAA-certified repair station. An operations manual must then be prepared for the aircraft that includes all details about its operations, maintenance, performance, limitations, and emergency procedures. After the aircraft is inspected and the operations manual is prepared, the owner must submit an application for an airworthiness certificate to the FAA. This application should include the registration information and the aircraft’s make and model. Along with the application, the owner must provide a maintenance release, which verifies that all inspections have been properly completed and the aircraft is safe for flight operations. Once all the documents have been submitted and reviewed, the FAA will issue the airworthiness certificate. This certificate is valid for two years, and must be renewed every two years by completing an inspection of the aircraft and submitting documentation to the FAA. This documentation must include a log of recent maintenance and flight operations and demonstrate that the aircraft continues to meet the safety requirements set forth by the FAA.
