What is the process for obtaining a multi-engine rating?

To obtain a multi-engine rating, pilots must fulfill the requirements of both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the California Aviation Division (CAD). First, a pilot must obtain a private pilot certificate, either a single-engine or multi-engine certificate, and be at least 18 years old. Second, pilots must pass an FAA-approved written exam, known as the “Practical Test Standards”, covering all areas of multi-engine operations, aircraft systems, and instrument flying. This exam must be taken with an FAA-certified instructor. Third, a pilot must obtain an FAA medical certificate. Additionally, pilots must have completed at least 25 hours of flight instruction on multi-engine aircraft, including at least 15 hours with an instructor. Finally, pilots must pass a final checkride with an FAA-certified instructor. This checkride is an in-flight evaluation where the instructor evaluates a pilot’s abilities in a variety of areas, including emergency operations and aircraft systems. After meeting all of the FAA and CAD requirements, pilots will be able to fly aircraft with more than one engine and can use their multi-engine rating to take on more complex aviation operations.
