What is the process for obtaining a multi-engine rating?

To obtain a multi-engine rating, pilots must fulfill the requirements of both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the California Aviation Division (CAD). First, a pilot must obtain a private pilot certificate, either a single-engine or multi-engine certificate, and be at least 18 years old. Second, pilots must pass an FAA-approved written exam, known as the “Practical Test Standards”, covering all areas of multi-engine operations, aircraft systems, and instrument flying. This exam must be taken with an FAA-certified instructor. Third, a pilot must obtain an FAA medical certificate.
