What is the process for obtaining a multi-engine rating?

In order to obtain a multi-engine rating in Michigan, you must meet certain qualifications and go through the following steps. First, you must be at least 17 years old and possess a valid private pilot certificate. You will also need to have logged a minimum of 25 hours of flight time as the pilot in command. Next, you will need to complete ground instruction related to operating a multi-engine aircraft. This instruction must be completed with an instructor certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). After completing ground instruction, you will then be able to move on to the practical part of obtaining the rating. The practical part consists of an in-flight portion. During this portion, you must demonstrate to the instructor the required skills, maneuvers, and knowledge to safely and compliantly operate a multi-engine aircraft. This portion must also be performed with an instructor certified by the FAA. Once you have successfully completed the practical portion, you will receive an endorsement in your pilot’s logbook from the instructor. This endorsement is proof specifically for your multi-engine rating. You must then take this endorsement to the FAA office or your local flight school to have your license officially issued. Congratulations, you’re now a multi-engine pilot!
