What existing laws govern the use of human stem cells in research?

In Oregon, the laws that govern the use of human stem cells in research are quite specific. The Oregon Fetal Tissue Research Act was passed in 1995 and regulates the use of fetal tissue for research or therapy purposes. The Oregon Stem Cell Research Act was then passed in 2007. This act restricts the use of human embryonic stem cells in research to those derived from in vitro fertilization that do not have an existing or potential life. Both of these laws require the informed consent of people whose fetal or embryonic tissue is used, and the destruction of any unused material. In addition, the Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) 453.500 - 453.610 governs the practice of tissue donation and transplantation. This includes various regulations regarding who is eligible to donate and receive tissue, and the rules and regulations surrounding the donation. In short, Oregon has several laws in place to regulate the use of human stem cells in research. These laws ensure that the research is conducted ethically and that the rights of individuals are respected.
