What is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard?
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a set of security standards created by the major credit card companies, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover, in order to protect cardholders from fraud and identity theft. The PCI DSS applies to any organization, business, or individual that processes, stores, or transmits credit card information. PCI DSS mandates a set of requirements that must be followed in order to ensure the safety and security of all credit cards and their associated data. These requirements cover areas such as physical security, network security, secure data storage and processing, encryption, access control, and monitoring of systems and personnel. In Oklahoma, organizations that are subject to the PCI DSS must comply with the requirements of the standard in order to protect cardholders from being victimized by fraud. Any breaches of PCI DSS standards must be reported to the credit card company within 1 day, or as soon as it is known, in order to prevent any further damage. Organizations in Oklahoma that process, store, or transmit credit card information must take the PCI DSS seriously and adhere to its requirements in order to protect the safety and security of their customers and their data. All organizations must also ensure that their staff is regularly trained on how to protect credit card data to the highest degree.
