What is mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI)?
Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) is a type of head injury that can occur when a person experiences a blow or jolt to the head or body. MTBI is typically defined as a traumatic brain injury with a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) of 13 to 15. This scale is used to measure a person’s level of consciousness after an injury. The Glasgow Coma Scale is typically used in order to assess how severe a person’s brain injury is after being involved in an incident such as a car accident. MTBI usually occurs when the head or body is jolted or shaken. This type of injury can cause a person to feel confused, disoriented, and experience a range of physical and cognitive symptoms. Common physical symptoms of MTBI may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, balance issues, vision problems, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. Cognitive symptoms may include memory difficulties, difficulty concentrating, confusion, and difficulty processing information. In New York, brain injury law focuses on the rights of those suffering from a mild traumatic brain injury. The focus is on protecting the rights of the injured party and on ensuring that they receive the proper compensation for their injury.
