What agencies are responsible for regulating businesses?

Businesses in California are regulated by a variety of agencies. On a federal level, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has primary responsibility for overseeing environmental and public health regulations, while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) ensures that workers are provided with a safe and healthy working environment. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversees the financial markets, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforces antitrust, consumer protection, and trade regulations. At the state level, the California Attorney General’s office enforces consumer protection laws and ensures fair competition. Additionally, the Department of Business Oversight and the Department of General Services are responsible for licensing and regulating financial institutions, as well as businesses and professional services providers. On a local level, cities and counties may have their own departments which oversee the enforcement of regulations, such as the Department of Building and Safety or the Department of Environmental Health. Finally, each industry may have its own regulatory agency, such as the California Department of Insurance for the insurance sector, or the Public Utilities Commission for utilities.
