What types of rights do children have under International Law?

Under international law, children have certain rights and protections that ensure their safety and wellbeing. These include rights to receive healthcare, education, and protection from exploitation and violence. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an international law that sets out the rights of all children, regardless of their citizenship, economic status, and religious beliefs. It was created in 1989 and is ratified by 196 countries. The primary rights of children include the right to life, the right to develop to their fullest potential, the right to protection from abuse or exploitation, and the right to access education and medical care. It also emphasizes the importance of the child’s opinion, allowing for greater autonomy and participation in decision-making processes. In addition to the UNCRC, there are other human rights instruments that also apply to children. These include the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. Furthermore, the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment affirms that any form of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of children, whether by a public official or any other person, is prohibited and should not be tolerated. It also requires states to protect children from both physical and mental harm and to provide appropriate treatment for victims. Overall, the international law provides children with comprehensive protection and promotes their welfare, health, and well-being. Consequently, children around the world have the right to live a safe, healthy, and happy life.
