What types of rights do children have under International Law?

Children around the world enjoy certain rights under the laws of many different countries and international organizations. In particular, International Law guarantees children certain rights. These include the right to protection from all forms of exploitation and abuse, the right to health care, safety, education, and an adequate standard of living, and the right to be free from discrimination. Additionally, children have the right to participate in matters affecting their lives and to express their opinions freely. International children’s rights become enforceable under Domestic Law, meaning that the Government of Virginia is responsible for protecting these rights. This falls under child advocacy law, which helps ensure that the rights of children are respected and protected. In Virginia, state-level child advocacy laws include the Virginia Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit, which assists low-income families with childcare costs, the Virginia Child Care Subsidy Program, which lowers the cost of childcare, and other initiatives which provide resources to children in the Commonwealth. Beyond Virginia state law, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most comprehensive international effort to protect the rights of children. The Convention provides an international framework for protecting children’s rights, and it has been adopted by 193 countries. This Convention outlines a number of rights, including the right to express opinions, the right to freedom of thought, the right to access health care and education, and the right to be protected from violence, exploitation, and discrimination. In all, children in Virginia, and around the world, have the right to protection and security, and it is important that these rights are respected and upheld. Child advocacy laws, both in Virginia and internationally, are important tools for protecting these rights and ensuring that all children can live in a safe and secure environment.
