What are the medical and recreational cannabis laws in my state?
In Wisconsin, cannabis laws are relatively restrictive. Medical cannabis is legal, but recreational cannabis is prohibited. Medical cannabis was legalized in April 2014 under the Wisconsin Compassionate Use Medical Cannabis Program. The program allows for certain individuals with a qualifying medical condition to possess and use cannabis for therapeutic use, under certain restrictions. To be eligible to use medical cannabis in Wisconsin, individuals must be diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition such as cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, or seizures related to epilepsy. Patients must obtain a recommendation from their doctor and obtain a registration card through the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Patients must also follow the rules of the medical cannabis program, which include not using the product while operating a motor vehicle or in a public place. Recreational cannabis use and possession in Wisconsin is still illegal. Possession of any amount of cannabis is punishable by a fine and possible jail time. Wisconsin also has penalties for cannabis distribution and cultivation. In addition, while many other states have decriminalized cannabis, possession of cannabis in Wisconsin is still considered a criminal offense. Overall, Wisconsin has restrictive cannabis laws. Medical cannabis use is legal but only for certain individuals and under certain conditions. Recreational cannabis is still illegal in the state and possession of any amount is punishable by a criminal offense.
