What are the penalties for illegal cannabis possession?

In North Carolina, the penalties for illegal cannabis possession are dependent on the amount in possession. Possession of less than 0.5 ounces is considered a Class 3 Misdemeanor, which carries a fine of up to $200. Meanwhile, possession of more than 0.5 ounces is considered a Class I Felony. This carries a potential fine of up to $1,000 and/or a prison sentence of 4 to 6 months. Additionally, if an individual is found to be in possession of more than 1.5 ounces of cannabis, the offense is treated as a Class H Felony. This could result in a fine of up to $10,000 and/or a prison sentence of 25 to 39 months. If the offender is a minor under eighteen years of age or has three or more prior convictions, the severity of the penalty may be doubled. Even if a person is found in possession of marijuana products legally obtained from another state, they are still subject to criminal penalties under North Carolina law. Such an offense is considered a Class 1 Misdemeanor, punishable by up to 4 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $500. In summary, North Carolina’s cannabis laws are very restrictive and punishments for illegal possession can be severe. It is important to know and understand the laws surrounding cannabis in the state so as to avoid any potential legal consequences.
