Is it legal to grow cannabis plants outdoors?

The answer to the question of whether it is legal to grow cannabis plants outdoors in Mississippi depends on the circumstance. Generally speaking, recreational cannabis and the growth of plants for recreational purposes is illegal in Mississippi. According to the Mississippi Department of Health, even possessing small amounts of non-medical cannabis is illegal. However, medical cannabis has been approved in a limited form in Mississippi since 2016. Patients with a debilitating medical condition may apply for a special medical marijuana card issued by the Mississippi Department of Health. Those patients may then purchase marijuana products from a licensed dispensary. Furthermore, those patients may also be allowed to grow a limited number of cannabis plants for personal medical use at their own residence. As such, it is legal for those who are approved medical cannabis patients in Mississippi to grow a limited number of cannabis plants outdoors, provided certain regulations are followed. Otherwise, the outdoor growth of cannabis plants remains illegal under Mississippi law.
