Yes, medical cannabis patients must meet certain requirements to obtain a medical marijuana card in New Jersey. In order to qualify, the patient must be a resident of the state and diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition. Qualifying medical conditions include chronic pain, cancer, glaucoma, muscular dystrophy, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other debilitating medical conditions. In addition to fulfilling these criteria, a licensed physician must make a written certification that the patient has a debilitating medical condition and may benefit from the therapeutic use of cannabis. Once this written certification is obtained and submitted to the state, the patient must complete an application for a medical marijuana card. Applicants must provide proof of their identity, as well as proof of their age and address. Once all of the required documents are submitted, the patient will be asked to pay the required fee. The fee is currently $200 and is valid for two years. After two years, the patient must reapply and submit the necessary documents and fee. Once the application is approved, the patient will then receive a medical marijuana card. With this card, the patient is legally allowed to possess and purchase cannabis for medical use. This card also allows the patient to obtain up to two ounces of cannabis from their designated alternative treatment center.
