Are there any restrictions on the use of cannabis for medical purposes?
In Kansas, the use of cannabis for medical purposes has been restricted by state law. In 2018, Kansas passed the Kansas Medical Marijuana Act, which legalized the use of CBD oil for the treatment of certain medical conditions. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is responsible for registering patients, caregivers, and facilities to produce and dispense CBD oil. To be eligible to use CBD oil, patients must be diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition and obtain a written certification from a physician that states they may benefit from the therapeutic use of cannabis. Patients must also register with the KDHE and obtain a patient registration card in order to obtain CBD oil. In addition to CBD oil, the Kansas Medical Marijuana Act also allows for the use of other cannabis derivatives, including products containing a THC concentration of no more than 5%. Patients who are prescribed cannabis products containing THC must also register with the KDHE. The KDHE has also established guidelines around the possession, storage, and consumption of medical cannabis. For example, patients are not allowed to possess more than a 30-day supply of cannabis products in their home at any time. In summary, patients in Kansas who are eligible for medical cannabis can obtain products containing CBD or THC, but they must register with the KDHE and comply with the state’s guidelines for possession, storage, and consumption.
