What are the deadlines for filing a credit card dispute?
In Virginia, consumers have certain deadlines for filing a credit card dispute. According to the law in Virginia, you must file a dispute with the credit card issuer within sixty (60) days of the transaction date. The credit card issuer must then investigate the dispute and must provide a resolution within two (2) billing cycles but not more than ninety (90) days of the date the dispute was filed. However, if the dispute involves an error made by the credit card issuer, such as a billing error, the credit card issuer must investigate and provide a resolution within the next two (2) billing cycles, which cannot be later than sixty (60) days from the date the dispute was filed. If the consumer is unsatisfied with the resolution offered by the credit card issuer, the consumer can file a complaint with the Virginia Office of the Attorney General. The complaint must be filed within one (1) year from the date of the transaction involving the dispute. In addition, the Virginia Office of the Attorney General has the authority to investigate complaints filed within the one (1) year period. Therefore, it is important to file any credit card disputes within the time limits prescribed by the law.
