How do I stop debt collectors from calling?

If you’re receiving calls from debt collectors in the state of Minnesota, you may be able to stop or limit their calls by using Credit Card Dispute Resolution Law. Under Minnesota Statutes, Section 332.37, debt collectors are not allowed to make more than one call to a debtor per day, except in certain cases. They must also wait period of at least two weeks before making another call after they receive a written request to stop calling. If you decide to make such a request, you should make it in writing and take these steps: 1. Mail the letter via certified mail to the debt collector and include the following information: • Your name • Your address • Your phone number • The date of the letter • The debt collectors name • A statement that you are asking the debt collector to stop calling. 2. Keep a copy of the letter for your records and make sure you date it. 3. Make sure to mention in the letter that you are invoking your rights under Minnesota Statutes, Section 332.37. It is also important that you answer any calls even if you have sent the written request, so that you can confirm that the debt collector has received your demand and that the calls have stopped. If you believe that the debt collector has not followed the state law, you can contact the Minnesota Attorney General’s office for more information.
