What is a fraud alert?

A fraud alert is an important tool used by credit card companies to help protect customers from fraud and identity theft. In South Carolina, there are two types of fraud alerts that consumers can set up on their credit cards: an initial fraud alert and an extended fraud alert. The initial fraud alert is a temporary alert that lasts 90 days. This alert requires creditors to take additional steps to verify someone’s identity before granting them credit. This alert can be set up if you believe you have been a victim of identity theft or fraud. The extended fraud alert lasts for seven years and requires creditors to take additional steps to verify someone’s identity before granting them credit. This alert can be set up if you have been a victim of identity theft and you provide an identity theft report. Both types of fraud alerts serve as an important warning to creditors and can help protect consumers from fraud and identity theft.
