What is a judgment?

A judgment is a decision made by a court or judge in a legal case. In the context of consumer debt defense law in New Hampshire, a judgment is a decision by the court or judge to award a debt collector money that the debtor owes. This money can include any unpaid bill, loan, or judgment, but can also include court costs, attorney’s fees, and other related costs associated with the case. Typically, judgments will include the amount owed, a clear deadline for payment, and a penalty if the payment is not made by the deadline. A judgment can also include other orders regarding the collection of the debt, such as wage garnishment, bank account garnishment, or property liens. Once a judgment is granted, it is entered into the public records of New Hampshire and can remain there for up to 20 years. It will show up on the debtor’s credit report, which can have a negative effect on their credit score and ability to obtain future loans. Although a judgment can be difficult for a debtor to overcome, New Hampshire consumer debt defense law does provide protection for debtors. Some of the laws provide the debtor with additional time to pay off the debt or the ability to negotiate a lower payment with the creditor. Debtors should seek legal advice when facing a judgment to understand their rights and explore all options to protect their financial wellbeing.
