How do I report consumer fraud?
In Illinois, if you are a consumer who believes you have been the victim of fraud, you can report it to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. To do so, you can call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438 or you can file an online complaint at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov. When you file a complaint with the Attorney General, you should provide as much information as possible, such as: a detailed description of the incident, the name of the business or person you believe has committed fraud, any documentation or supporting evidence related to the incident, and relevant contact information. In addition to filing a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office, you can also report consumer fraud to your local police department or the police department where the fraud occurred. You can also contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to file a complaint about deceptive business practices. Finally, you can also file a civil lawsuit against the person or business that committed the fraud. The lawsuit will seek monetary damages along with an injunction to stop the fraud from occurring again. By filing a complaint or a lawsuit, you can hold businesses and persons accountable for committing consumer fraud. Taking legal action will also help protect other consumers from being taken advantage of in the future.
