What is credit card fraud?

Credit card fraud is a type of consumer fraud that involves using someone’s credit card without their permission to buy goods and services, or to steal their money. In New York, credit card fraud is a crime and punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both. Credit card fraud generally involves someone stealing a person’s credit card number and using it to make unauthorized purchases. This could involve buying something online without the cardholder’s knowledge, using a card to purchase goods and services when the cardholder is not present, or using the card to make a purchase that was not approved by the cardholder. Other types of credit card fraud include identity theft, where an imposter uses someone’s stolen credit card information to open multiple accounts under their name. This form of fraud can have long-term negative impacts on an individual’s credit score, making it difficult to secure loans or other forms of credit in the future. If you think you may be a victim of credit card fraud, you should report it right away to your local police department and the credit card issuer. If you’ve been a victim, you could be eligible for damages and/or refunds for any unauthorized purchases as long as you can prove the activity was fraudulent.
