What is telemarketing fraud?
Telemarketing fraud is when a scammer uses the telephone to illegally obtain money or personal information from someone. In Washington, it is a violation of consumer fraud law. Telemarketing fraud often involves fraudsters who make high-pressure sales pitches or offers that are too good to be true. They may claim that the consumer won a prize, or that they need to act quickly to purchase a product or service, in order to try and steal money or personal information. Telemarketing fraud can be difficult to spot because fraudsters can be convincing. They may use deceptive language or tactics such as offering free gifts or services. Additionally, they may try to use scare tactics such as claiming that a consumer must act quickly in order to avoid a penalty or that their personal information is in danger. Fortunately, Washington has consumer protection laws in place to protect consumers from these types of fraud. For instance, consumers should never give out their personal or financial information over the phone unless they have verified the company is legitimate. Additionally, it is illegal for a telemarketer to call before 8am or after 9pm. Consumers should always be skeptical of any offer that seems too good to be true and should also request written materials about any offers they receive over the phone.
