What is internet fraud?

Internet fraud is a form of consumer fraud that involves taking advantage of individuals or businesses through the use of an online website or platform. It can include online scams, identity theft, phishing, or other schemes that seek to take money or personal information from unsuspecting victims. This type of fraud is especially difficult to detect, as perpetrators are often able to hide their identity and activities. In Virginia, the Consumer Protection Act of 1991 protects consumers from any deceptive or unfair trade practices. The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) is responsible for enforcing this act, and they have recently created a Division of Consumer Services to ensure that all consumers are protected when using the internet. This includes activities such as internet auctions, sales, or communication services. The internet has opened up the door to numerous fraudulent activities, and Virginia has strict laws in place to protect individuals and businesses from this type of fraudulent activity. The Division of Consumer Services works to educate the public about internet fraud and provides resources to help individuals recognize and report fraudulent activity. If a person suspects that they are a victim of internet fraud, they should report the incident to the SCC immediately. Individuals can report the activity online, by phone, or by mail. The Division of Consumer Services will then investigate the complaint and take action if necessary. Consumers should also contact the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint if the suspected activity involves interstate commerce or is related to a federal agency.
