What is investment fraud?

Investment fraud is an illegal activity that involves taking advantage of investors through false promises and dishonest practices. It is a form of consumer fraud, and it is a crime in the state of Virginia. Investment fraud can come in many forms, but it typically involves a person or organization encouraging people to invest money for a high rate of return, which is either impossible or highly unlikely to happen. Sometimes, investment fraud involves legitimate investments, but the perpetrators mislead potential investors on the true nature of the investment, deny risks associated with the investment or withhold important facts or information. Other times, investment fraud involves a scam, in which the person or organization promises nonexistent or very low-risk investments with high returns. Fraudsters may also use investors’ money for purposes other than what was promised. In some cases, the person or organization behind the fraud may have legitimate credentials, such as a securities license, and the investor may have no way of knowing about the fraud until it is too late. Investment fraud is a serious crime and can have serious financial and legal consequences for the perpetrators. If you have been a victim of investment fraud, it is important to report it to the proper authorities.
