What is health care fraud?

Health care fraud is a type of consumer fraud that affects people in Virginia and around the country. It occurs when someone knowingly and deliberately misrepresents or conceals information for the purpose of obtaining some form of payment or benefit from a health care provider or insurer. Health care fraud can take many different forms, such as billing for services that were never provided, providing unnecessary services, or providing wrong diagnoses to increase the amount of money paid out by an insurance company. It can also involve a doctor or other health care provider receiving kickbacks for referring patients to other health care providers. Health care fraud is a serious crime and can result in fines, jail time, or both, for those found guilty. The Virginia state government has put in place many laws to help combat health care fraud and protect consumers from becoming victims of this type of consumer fraud.
