What is civil law?

Civil law is a system of laws which are concerned with the disputes which arise between individuals, instead of those between the government and an individual. These laws are established and enforced by the state, and they regulate relationships between people and organizations. In California, civil law is mainly composed of the California Civil Code and the California Code of Civil Procedure. The California Civil Code is a set of laws which outlines the rights and duties between two or more parties in a variety of civil situations, such as contracts, torts, and real estate. The code also outlines the appropriate procedures for enforcing these laws. For example, it might outline how a court can order a defendant to pay damages to a plaintiff, or how an employer must treat a worker according to the labor laws. The California Code of Civil Procedure governs the procedures and rules that must be followed when a case is brought to court. This code outlines filing deadlines, discovery rules, and rules of evidence which must be followed in civil cases.
