What is a lien in civil law?

In Oklahoma civil law, a lien is a type of legal right held by a creditor (the person or entity to whom a debt is owed) to possess another person’s property until their debt is paid in full. The lien gives the creditor the legal right to repossess the property if the debtor fails to make timely payments, and possibly even to sell the property in order to recoup some of their costs. A lien may be created in Oklahoma by an agreement between the creditor and debtor, by a court order, or by a statute.
