What is a class representative?

A class representative, also known as a class representative plaintiff or class action plaintiff, is someone who sues on behalf of a group of people who have a common interest in a legal dispute. In a class action lawsuit, a single individual or group of individuals, called the class, is allowed to bring a claim on behalf of the entire class so that all of the members of the class are able to seek compensation. In Florida, a class representative is chosen by either the court or the attorney bringing the lawsuit on behalf of the class. The representative may be one of the individuals who sparked the lawsuit, a leader of the group, or someone who the court determines can best represent the interests of the entire class. The class representative is responsible for proving that the members of the class were wronged, and they must also remain informed of the progress made throughout the case. In addition, the class representative is required to ensure that all of the members of the class receive any settlement or award that may be granted by the court. In Florida, class action lawsuits are often a great way to seek compensation when individuals are not able to bring a suit against their wrongdoers. By having a class representative, the affected class of individuals is able to receive the help they need, while also helping to deter practices that would harm others in the future.
