What is a class representative?
A class representative is an individual who represents the interests of a group in a class action lawsuit. In Idaho, class action lawsuits are lawsuits that involve a large number of individuals who have a common complaint against a company or organization. The individuals in the class action are referred to as the “class members” and the class representative is the person who speaks for the class members in court. The class representative must be knowledgeable about the class’s collective interests and must be able to articulate them before the court. The class representative is typically chosen by the court and must have the ability to fairly represent the class members. In Idaho, the class representative is tasked with researching the complaint and taking responsibility for presenting the case to the court. This includes collecting information from the class members, determining how the case should be structured, and identifying the key witnesses who should be called to testify. Class representatives are expected to understand the facts of the case and the law in order to make an informed decision about how to proceed. In addition, the class representative is responsible for communicating the progress of the case to the class members and acting as a mediator, should class members decide to settle. The class representative is also expected to work with the class members’ attorney, if any, and to ensure that the class’s collective interests are supported in court. In the end, the role of the class representative is to ensure that the rights of the class members are protected throughout the legal process.
