What are the laws regarding censorship on the internet?

In Mississippi, there is no one consistent law regarding censorship on the internet. Instead, there are a variety of laws that indirectly address censorship. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects people’s right to freedom of expression, and the U.S Supreme Court has recognized this same right in relation to online expression. In addition, there are several other laws that protect certain types of online expression from censorship. The Communications Decency Act of 1996, for example, prohibits censorship of certain types of user-generated content, like online comments and reviews. The Child Online Protection Act of 1998 also prohibits the censorship of certain content that is deemed harmful to minors. At the state level, Mississippi’s Computer Use and Information Security Act prohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of computer software, as well as fraudulent access to computers. The law also prohibits the use of computers to harass or intimidate another person. Finally, Mississippi’s cybercrime law specifically prohibits the distribution of obscene material via the internet. In general, the laws in Mississippi protect people’s right to freely express themselves online. There are, however, certain limits on what is allowed, so it is important to be familiar with the applicable laws before engaging in any online activities.
