Are there any laws concerning the use of machine learning algorithms for decision making and automation?
In Texas, as in many other states, the use of machine learning algorithms for decision making and automation is governed by both state and federal laws. On the federal level, the 1966 Privacy Act imposes strict rules on the use of machine learning algorithms, including, but not limited to, the prohibition of collecting and using personal data without express consent. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) publishes various guidelines for manufacturers and companies that use machine learning algorithms. At the state level, the Texas Privacy Act (also known as the Texas Data Protection Law) provides additional measures for the protection of personal data collected from machine learning algorithms. The act includes provisions for the collection, use and storage of such data, such as the requirement that companies must ensure only authorized personnel have access to the collected data. It is important to note that many of these laws are still evolving, as technology advances. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning are growing rapidly, and the implications of using such technology for decision making and automation remain unclear. Companies and organizations will need to stay abreast of the legal landscape in order to remain compliant with the applicable laws.
