What are the differences between a contractor and a subcontractor?
A contractor and a subcontractor are both important parties in a construction project, but there are some distinct differences between them. A contractor is the person or business responsible for the overall management of a construction project. They are responsible for obtaining any necessary permits, hiring employees and subcontractors, and providing the materials needed. Contractors are typically the ones who are in charge of the entire project, including the budget and timeline. A subcontractor is different in that they are contracted by the contractor to perform specific tasks or parts of a construction project. A subcontractor is not typically responsible for the entire project, but rather just the portion that they are assigned to. They are usually required to sign a contract with the contractor, outlining the terms and conditions of the agreement. The main difference between a contractor and a subcontractor is that the contractor is in charge of the entire project, while the subcontractor is only responsible for the work they are assigned to do. Therefore, the contractor is ultimately responsible for the completion of the project, while the subcontractor is only responsible for the portion of the project that they are assigned. In the state of Florida, all contractors must be registered and licensed by the Construction Industry Licensing Board in order to work on projects. Additionally, subcontractors must have a valid Florida contractor’s license in order to legally work on projects in the state.
