What are the requirements for obtaining a contractor's license?
To work as a contractor in West Virginia, one must be licensed by the West Virginia Division of Labor. The requirements for obtaining a contractor’s license are as follows: 1. The contractor must be at least 18 years old and a resident of West Virginia or have an office or place of business in West Virginia. 2. The contractor must pass the required examination which consists of the West Virginia Contractor’s core exam and specialty exam according to the scope of work. 3. The contractor is required to pass the West Virginia Journeyman Electrician or HVAC exam if the contractor plans to do any electrical or HVAC work. 4. The contractor must provide proof of worker’s compensation insurance in the amount of $100,000 per occurrence and $500,000 aggregate. 5. The contractor must provide proof of liability insurance in the amount of $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate. 6. The contractor must provide an original financial statement showing the contractor’s financial capacity to perform the work of a contractor. 7. The contractor must complete the Application to Apply for Contractor’s License and pay the applicable fee. After passing the examination and meeting all the other requirements mentioned above, the applicant will be issued a contractor’s license and can then become a contractor in the state of West Virginia.
