What is consumer law?

Consumer law is an area of law that protects consumers from unfair business practices and provides a system to seek justice if their rights are violated. In Nebraska, consumer protection laws, also known as “Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices,” are established and enforced by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. These laws exist to protect consumers from fraudulent marketing schemes, deceptive pricing, and creditors who attempt to collect more than is legally due. Consumer laws also protect consumers from false advertising, product safety hazards, and unfair lending practices. The law also protects consumers from retailers who sell counterfeit or stolen goods. Additionally, consumers are protected from “bait and switch” tactics, where a retailer advertises one product at a low price but then tries to sell the consumer a different product at a higher price. In Nebraska, the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division looks out for consumers by investigating possible violations of state consumer protection laws. The Consumer Protection Division can then focus on resolving consumer complaints and enforcing the law. The Consumer Protection Division may pursue legal action against businesses who violate consumer law or misrepresent themselves. The Attorney General’s Office can also offer resources for consumers who have been wronged so that they can get the justice and restitution they deserve.
