What kind of consumer protections are available in the auto repair industry?

In Delaware, consumers who purchase auto repair services are protected by the Delaware Motor Vehicle Service Protection Act. This law requires any auto repair shop to provide warranties for its services and guarantee the accuracy and quality of its work. If a repair fails within a specific period of time of the repair being completed, the repairer would be responsible for re-doing it and covering the cost associated with it. In Delaware, auto repair shops must also provide consumers with a written estimate for the repair services they will be providing before any work is undertaken. This estimate must include a complete list of parts or supplies to be used, as well as the estimated time to complete the job and the cost of labor. As with the guarantee, if the repair costs exceed the estimate provided, the repair shop must cover the costs above and beyond the estimate. In addition, auto repair shops must also provide necessary documents such as invoices and repair orders upon completion of the repair services. Consumers in Delaware also have the right to view any parts that have been replaced and that have been returned to the repair shop. This is to ensure that the repair was done accurately and that the customer was charged the correct amount for the service. Finally, in Delaware, customers have the right to dispute a repair invoice if they feel that the service and/or parts provided did not meet the estimate or were not correctly executed. If the dispute is found to be legitimate, the auto repair shop must cover the cost of replacing parts or services that failed to meet the customer’s expectations.
