What kind of consumer protections are available in the auto repair industry?
In Hawaii, consumers have certain protections when it comes to auto repair services. Under the state Consumer Protection Code, anyone providing auto repair services must have a valid license from the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA). This license is required for anyone performing services such as repairs, servicing, painting, and other related activities to motor vehicles. In addition, auto repair services must provide an estimate of the cost of the services prior to performing the work. They must include all parts and labor costs as well as any additional fees that may be accepted. This includes a detailed itemized list of services and parts. If the estimated price is more than 10% higher than the final cost, the consumer can either accept the changes or be refunded for the difference. Consumers in Hawaii also have the right to a three-day right of rescission. This allows a customer to cancel an agreement within three business days without having to incur any fees or charges. In addition, if a customer is not satisfied with the services provided, they can request a full or partial refund. Finally, Hawaii also offers a Automotive Repair Fraud Prevention Fund. This fund is available for consumers who have been deceived, embarrassed, or injured because of fraudulent auto repair services. The fund covers any damages up to $2,000 per incident. This means that consumers can rest assured that they have some protections when working with auto repair services in Hawaii.
