What consumer protections exist for the purchase of mobile devices?
In Georgia, consumer law provides strong protection against deceptive and unfair practices related to the purchase of mobile devices. For example, sellers must clearly state their return and refund policies. If such policies are not stated prior to purchase, the consumer may cancel the purchase within 20 days for any reason and receive a full refund. Mobile devices must also meet certain standards in terms of quality. Manufacturers are required to provide warranties in the event of a defect, and the duration of the warranty must be clearly stated. Consumers are also protected against long-term contracts, as such contracts are limited to one year and must be in writing. In addition, Georgia law also provides protections against fraudulent transactions. This includes stating the exact details of the purchase, such as the price, payment method, and other terms. Consumers must also be warned of any hidden fees or other charges that may be attached to the transaction. Last but not least, Georgia law prohibits sellers from taking advantage of consumers through false and/or misleading advertising. All advertising, promotional materials, and online information must clearly reflect the product’s actual features and benefits. If the consumer is misled due to false advertising, they may be entitled to a refund or other legal remedies.
