What is the role of the Competition and Markets Authority?

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the independent body responsible for enforcing competition and consumer protection law in Delaware and the United Kingdom. It was established in 2014, following the merger of the Competition Commission and the Office of Fair Trading. The CMA’s main role is to ensure fair competition in various markets and industries across Delaware and the UK. This includes investigating and taking action against companies which are engaging in anti-competitive practices or abusing their market power. The CMA may impose fines, stop practices from continuing or require companies to sell certain assets or end certain business activities. The CMA also works to protect consumer rights. It investigates allegations of price-fixing, misleading advertising, unfair terms in consumer contracts, unfair trading practices and more. It can take action against any company that is found to be in breach of consumer protection laws, such as imposing fines or requiring companies to offer consumers refunds or other compensation. The CMA is thus an important player in Delaware’s commercial law system, protecting both businesses and consumers from unfair practices. It helps ensure that everyone has fair access to goods and services in the market and that businesses cannot take advantage of their positions.
