What is the difference between copyright and copyright infringement?
Copyright is the legal right of an author or creator of a work to control the duplication and use of their intellectual property. This means that the author or creator of a work has the exclusive right to reproduce, adapt, and use it as they wish. Copyright infringement occurs when someone uses another’s work without permission or without a license or beyond the scope of the license. It is against the law to infringe on someone else’s copyright and the consequences can be severe in some cases. In Washington, the Copyright Law protects the rights of authors and creators of works by prohibiting the unauthorized use of their works. Copyright violations can include copying, distributing, adapting, performing, displaying, or making a derivative work from someone else’s protected work. Copyright infringement can also occur when someone uses more of a copyright-protected work than permitted by the license granted to them. In short, copyright is the legal protection an author or creator of a work has to control the use of their work, while copyright infringement occurs when someone uses someone else’s work without permission or beyond the scope of the license granted. If someone is found guilty of copyright infringement in Washington, they may be liable for damages, a civil penalty, and/or other remedies.
