What is the Digital Copyright Act?
The Digital Copyright Act is a federal law that protects digital media from copyright infringement. It protects the rights of copyright holders by ensuring their original works are not illegally reproduced, distributed, or sold without authorization. The law was signed into effect in 1998 by Congress as a response to the rise of illegal file sharing and the increasing availability of digital media. In North Carolina, the Digital Copyright Act is enforced through the courts. If a person is found to be guilty of copyright infringement, they may be faced with civil and criminal punishments, such as fines up to $150,000 for each violation or even up to five years in prison. The Digital Copyright Act also sets out the rights of the copyright holder. These include the right to reproduce or distribute the work, the right to create derivative works, the right to display the work, and the right to perform the work. It also provides for additional rights, including the right to control access to the work and the right to receive payment when their work is used. The Digital Copyright Act is an important law that helps protect authors, songwriters, artists, and other copyright holders from corporations or individuals looking to exploit their works without permission. This law ensures that digital works remain protected so that they can be enjoyed by generations to come.
