What information is included in a credit report?
A credit report includes some very important financial information about an individual. In Washington, the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) all provide credit reports to lenders and other organizations. Generally, a credit report includes information about an individual such as: • Name, address and Social Security number • Credit history including payment history and any accounts that are past due • Bankruptcy information • Public records such as tax liens or judgments • Inquiries from loan or credit applications • Any credit accounts in collections • Employment history A credit report also provides lenders with an individual’s credit score which is a numerical representation of their creditworthiness. Credit scores range from 300 to 850, with higher scores indicating a stronger credit history. Credit reports are used regularly by creditors and lenders when assessing an individual’s creditworthiness. It’s important to check your credit report regularly to make sure the information is accurate and up to date, as errors can effect your credit score and ability to obtain credit. In Washington, state law offers certain protections for consumers in terms of their credit history, such as the right to dispute any inaccurate information found in a credit report.
