What is the difference between a credit report dispute and a credit report dispute letter?
A credit report dispute is a challenge to the accuracy of information on your credit report. It is usually done online or over the phone and typically involves providing information to the credit bureau to help verify or disprove the accuracy of the information in question. The credit bureau then investigates the dispute and issues an updated report. A credit report dispute letter is a written correspondence sent directly to the credit bureaus that contains the details of the dispute. It should include all relevant information, including any documents or other proof to back up the dispute. The credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate the dispute after receiving the letter. Generally, they will update your credit report with their findings or respond to the letter with an explanation of why the information was not changed. Under credit repair law in California, consumers have the right to dispute information in their credit reports and to receive a response from the credit bureaus. The dispute process may be accessed by sending a credit report dispute letter to the relevant credit bureau. In cases where the information is inaccurate, the credit bureau must update the report with accurate information or delete the disputed item.
