Will the trustee liquidate all of my belongings in Chapter 7 Bankruptcy?

In Virginia, if you choose to file under Chapter 7 bankruptcy law, you will be assigned a trustee who will be responsible for liquidating your non-exempt assets. These assets may include cash, cars, furniture, jewelry, etc.. However, many of your assets may be exempt from liquidation, such as your primary residence, your clothing, and up to a certain amount of equity in your vehicle. Your trustee may also sell nonexempt assets, such as second homes, boats, motorcycles, collections, and other expensive items. If the trustee is able to sell these assets, they must use the proceeds to pay off your creditors. Any remaining balance of the proceeds will be given to you. Once all of your non-exempt assets have been liquidated and your creditors have been paid, the remaining debt will be discharged and you will no longer be responsible for it. If your trustee is unable to sell any of your nonexempt assets, they will be returned to you after your bankruptcy is discharged. In conclusion, depending on which assets you own and the amount of equity you have in them, the trustee in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Virginia may not liquidate all of your belongings. However, it is important to note that any nonexempt assets may be liquidated in order to pay off your creditors.
