Can child support be enforced internationally?

Yes, child support can be enforced internationally in the state of Virginia. The Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) is a federal law that allows child support orders to cross state and even international borders, in order to ensure that the child receives the proper financial support. Once a child support order has been established in Virginia, it can be enforced if the other parent moves to a different state or even a different country. To do this, Virginia must send a request to the other state or country, asking them to enforce the order. States and countries that are members of the Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance, are required by law to honor and enforce these orders. In addition, if the other parent lives in a state or country that has not implemented UIFSA, Virginia can work with the U.S. State Department to help enforce the order. The State Department will work with foreign government agencies to try to collect any owed child support payments and transfer them to the parent in Virginia. Overall, child support orders can be enforced internationally in Virginia, in order to ensure that the child receives the financial support they are entitled to.
