Which states allow civil unions?
Civil unions are alternative forms of legal recognition designed to provide much of the same rights and benefits as marriage, but with some differences. Civil unions are not recognized in all states. Currently, only a few states in the US allow civil unions. These states include: Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Nevada, and Rhode Island. Additionally, the District of Columbia also allows civil unions. In the state of Georgia, it is important to note that civil unions are not recognized, either legally or otherwise. In 2017, a bill was proposed that would have provided for civil unions in Georgia. Despite garnering strong support, the bill ultimately failed to pass. As such, same-sex couples in Georgia are only able to receive the same legal rights and protections that are accorded to married couples by virtue of being legally married. Other states such as California and New York offer a form of domestic partnership or civil union that is similar to marriage. These forms of domestic partnership are not, however, considered marital rights. Therefore, couples in these states do not receive the same rights and benefits that married couples are granted under state and federal law. Overall, same-sex couples in the US have the option of entering into civil unions in the states listed above, or marriage in all 50 states. Despite the expansion of same-sex marriage in the US, it is important to remember that many states do not recognize civil unions and provide limited rights to same-sex couples living in them.
