Are civil unions recognized across state lines?
Civil unions are not recognized across state lines in the United States, including Georgia. This means that a civil union formed in one state is not recognized in any other state, even if the individuals involved move to a different state. For example, if married couple with a civil union in Georgia moves to New York, their civil union will not be recognized in New York. This can cause issues if the couple wishes to divorce or if one partner passes away and the other wishes to claim any assets. Many LGBT activists and organizations have been advocating for legislation that would recognize the legal status of same-sex couples and their civil unions across state lines. Currently, this is not possible under federal law.
