Which countries recognize civil unions?

Civil unions are recognized in many countries throughout the world. In the U.S.A., civil unions are not currently recognized or granted the same rights as marriage at a federal level, but some individual states do recognize them, including South Carolina. In Australia, civil unions are recognized in all states and are often referred as “deeds of relationship”. These arrangements are generally given similar force and effect as marriage. In Belgium, same-sex couples can enter into civil unions or register their partnership. This allows couples to receive the same legal protection as married couples. Similarly, in Brazil, same-sex couples can enter into a “stable union” to obtain legal rights and responsibilities. In New Zealand, civil unions are recognized by law and are given the same rights and obligations as marriage. In the United Kingdom, civil partnerships are recognized as a union of two people, regardless of their gender. These partnerships are legally enforceable and can be registered or dissolved in court. Finally, in Switzerland, same-sex couples can also enter into a “registered partnership” which provides the same rights and obligations as a marriage or civil union. Overall, many countries throughout the world recognize and allow civil unions for same-sex couples, providing them with the same rights and responsibilities as a married couple.
