Are there any age requirements for entering into a civil union?

In South Carolina, there are age requirements in place for entering into a civil union. In order to enter into a civil union, the couple must both be 18 years or older and not related to each other. If one of the parties is age 16 or 17, they can enter into a civil union with the consent of a parent or guardian. If the parties are both below the age of 16, they will need the consent of a court before entering into a civil union. In addition to the age requirements, there are other criteria which must be met before a civil union is valid. Both parties must be unmarried and not be in another legal union or arrangement. The parties must also have the legal capacity to enter into a contract with each other and must sign a civil union agreement. This agreement must be signed in the presence of two witnesses and the parties must declare their acceptance of the agreement in front of the witnesses. Civil unions in South Carolina grant couples many of the same benefits that married couples enjoy, such as health care decisions, property rights, and inheritance laws. It is important for those wishing to enter into a civil union to understand and meet the age and other requirements in order for their union to be legally recognized.
