What are the legal benefits of a civil union?
A civil union is a legally recognized relationship between two individuals in New Jersey. It provides couples with some of the same legal protections and benefits as those available to married couples. The legal benefits of a civil union in New Jersey include the ability to make medical decisions for one another, continue health insurance coverage, make funeral arrangements and inherit property. Additionally, civil union couples are subject to state tax laws and benefits the same as married couples, including the right to file joint tax returns and access to the survivor’s pension benefits.
