Is the legal validity of a civil union recognized in other states?
The legal validity of a civil union in one state can be recognized in other states depending on the law in that particular state. Civil union laws vary from state to state; however, most states recognize civil unions from other states. In Alaska, civil unions are not recognized by the state. However, if a civil union is conducted in a state where it is recognized, its legality is recognized in the State of Alaska. Similarly, if two individuals who have entered into a civil union move to Alaska, the civil union is valid in the state. There are some exceptions to this rule, however. For instance, some states do not recognize same-sex civil unions conducted in other states. Additionally, some states may recognize civil unions in other states but not grant the same rights and privileges to civil union couples that married couples may receive. The best way to determine whether or not a civil union conducted in one state will be recognized in another state is to research the laws in each respective state. While some states are more open to recognizing a civil union conducted in another state, some states are not as open to recognizing civil unions across state lines.
