Is a civil union recognized in employment benefits?
In Alaska, the civil union law does not specifically address employment benefits. Civil union partners are not considered to be a legal spouse for the purposes of employers providing benefits such as health insurance. However, some large employers in Alaska do provide benefits to civil union partners. It is up to the discretion of each employer as to whether or not they choose to recognize civil unions and provide benefits. Therefore, whether or not a civil union is recognized in employment benefits in Alaska is dependent on the employer. If a person is concerned about receiving employment benefits, they should contact their employer to find out if they recognize civil unions and offer benefits to those in a civil union. It is important to note, however, that even if an employer does not recognize civil unions, the employee may still be able to receive benefits if they designate a civil union partner as an alternate beneficiary when filling out benefit forms. This allows the employee to provide benefits to their partner, even if the employer does not provide those benefits.
